Week 14
We started the week with 3 days of SNOW!
I suppose it seemed worse because we have had a couple of good days already...(and because Cheryl sent me beach photos from Cape Paterson).
We had Easter Monday off and we closed on Thursday as well because a few clients had other commitments, including Covid Vaccinations. So, it was a very short week that went by very quickly nonetheless.
On Tuesday morning as I opened things up out the back, I found that we had another tree down and roofing sheets blown off a workshed. It was almost possible to trace the line of the wind gust that did the damage.
It wasn't quite as bad but it reminded me of a "valwind" that they refer to over here...
(A few years ago there was a nearby valwind event that they could trace for several kilometres - it took out a single tree at a caravan park (near our Felder's Boskje boat mooring), which fell on a caravan, killing a young girl).
Translated from the Weather Bureau site...
Downwind
The wind field with a rain cloud can also be smaller. The cold then plunges into a small area only a kilometer in diameter. The air then accelerates, causing the wind to increase. At that enormous speed, the cold on the earth's surface is searching its way in all kinds of directions. The air shatters, as it were.
Such a fall wind (also called downburst) is especially dangerous due to the sudden increase in wind. The forces that are released are great and can cause damage in an area many hundreds of meters wide and kilometers in length. In a falling wind, the affected objects lie in more or less straight lines in the direction of the wind.
Luckily, we had 3 sheets left over, so we used two of them to make the repairs - this time with longer screws!Boeke helps me light the fire in the morning...
Little wonder the Covid Kilos are gaining ground...
I've been making too many pies, banana pancakes and appelflappen!
(just to keep busy).
I brought the Breville pie maker over from Australia in 1996 - it's getting a bit old now. Oddly enough, we think we can now buy one over here - I couldn't even buy an electric frying pan over here back then. (we're still using our old one from about the same era - mainly to make Ken's Lasagne for the kids).
Walking Ommetjes (20 minute walks "around the block") has become a habit - but they (The Brain Foundation) say it is more for the brain than for fitness...for me it is all about walking the dog - which I have to do anyway.
Janny is 3rd and gaining, Rennie (Janny's Mum) is 4th (at age 88!) - out of 75 people in our village.
Wijnjewoude Energie Neutraal still has it's target at 2025.
(right click translate to English)
Wijnjjewoude is viewed as a Pilot Study and with that in mind, the organisers have just been given a €4.3 million grant (Government or EU??).
So, in turn, each household can get €2000,00 to invest as they wish on energy saving projects.
Our neighbours have ripped out their old flooring and are replacing it with insulation blocks, a concrete floor and floor heating...Janny is making strange noises and several visits to inspect their progress...I don't know if I have that left in me...but we shall see!
Under floor heating is the best. Had it in the new school building. Didn’t need to turn the heaters on if the floor heater was on. Lovely.
